BLM Designated CDT Route
in Southern New Mexico
Summary
The following table summarizes the water source informtion for the Designated route for the CDT from the Crazy Cook Monument on the Mexican border to Silver City, NM - as we found it to be in April 2006. YMMV
Updated information has been added below as of 1 May 2008. Read carefully.
Both the locations and the status/quality of these water sources are subject to change based on factors that are NOT related to your thruhike and are beyond control by either you or us.
To repeat - the MOST important requirement for a CDT hiker is --- FLEXIBLITY.
So - some general comments on the route and water:
The Crazy Cook Monument and the border itself are interesting - and will give some insight as to why "closing the Mexican border" is a joke.
Most northbound hikers who use this route will want water at Sheridan Canyon. The windmill is "off-trail" up the canyon. Don't miss it. (Yes - some hikers have. )
Many of the water sources listed here are "off-trail," but generally visible from the trail.
Not all of these sources are reliable - or even viable. They are "potential" water sources - even including those that are presently broken or shut off. "Broken" can be fixed if someone has reason to do so.
Water sources may be on or off depending on rainfall, drought conditions, whether they are necessary to support ranching operations - or other factors. If you see cows, then there IS water someplace close by. It may or may not be at one of the sources listed here. If you need it, look for it - or go on to the next source.
Green water won't kill you - it probably won't even make you sick. But we still prefer to filter it - for esthetic reasons if nothing else. Even so, it very often still "tastes green."
Being mechanically adept is handy but not absolutely necessary There are a lot of different varieties of water mechanisms. Some of them are easy to figure out - others are a little harder. Some of them are sometimes simply disabled - don't take it personally, don't try to force the mechanism - and don't break it (that would piss off a lot of people).
Another statement of the obvious - gates and water sources have something in common - if they're on/open when you get there, leave them that way when you leave. If they're off/closed when you get there, leave them that way when you leave.
To repeat - the MOST important requirement for a CDT hiker is --- FLEXIBLITY.
Yeah - we said that before - but it CAN'T be said too many times because too few people hear or understand it.
If you click on the links in the description column of the table, there are some pictures of some of the water sources.
